Department of Navy Wins Prestigious NARA Award

Records Management Initiative Recognized by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration

May 9, 2007 — Reston, Virginia —The Department of the Navy (DON) has been selected by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to receive one of five Archivist Achievement Awards for outstanding accomplishments in Federal Records Management.

The Navy earned this award for its DON Enterprise Records Management Solution (ERMS), built on TOWER Software’s TRIM Context enterprise content management solution. The Navy was recognized specifically for its ability to provide full-range lifecycle records management capabilities, up to and including disposition.

An extract from the award application sent to NARA stated: “The DON ERMS has enabled fundamental changes in … record maintenance practices that have greatly improved our procedures. The DON ERMS has provided us capabilities for collaborative record access, maintenance, and review across the world-wide DON … community that has enabled us to streamline our workflows and improve performance in all aspects of our work.”

Through TRIM Context, the DON core configuration was deployed across the Navy, with each major organization receiving its own pre-populated TRIM Context repository. TRIM Context’s core configuration capability was critical to achieving a rapid six-week deployment per repository across many disparate organizations. Each organization only needed to focus on its unique requirements, saving countless hours of effort and accelerating implementation.

To date, the ERMS program, using TRIM Context has enabled the capture of over 500,000 official records across 148 unique Navy processes.

The NARA Archivist Achievement Awards are presented annually, recognizing outstanding Federal records management programs and activities that can be used as models for other organizations. This year’s award was presented at the 19th Annual Records Administration Conference (RACO 2007) in Washington, D.C.
