Natural England To Manage Physical Records With Tower Software

Conservation organisation chooses TRIM Context electronic document and records management (EDRM) system

Wokingham, Berkshire – 11 June, 2007 – Natural England, the environment organisation that brought together English Nature, the Countryside Agency and the Rural Development Service has selected the TRIM Context EDRM system to consolidate and better manage its physical records. As part of a new project to merge the three networks into one and modernise its records management and ILM (information lifecycle management) practices, Natural England will use the TOWER Software solution as the backbone of a new file plan. With a comprehensive index of physical records - such as building deeds, estates data, satellite images, photographs, documents, letters and maps – the organisation plans to achieve better control of information across its enterprise, allowing more widespread sharing and accessibility.

“Some of our records go back as far as 50 years. So, when our scientific teams conduct surveys related to mapping, landscapes or conservation and wildlife, it’s often important for them to be able to look back at historical data for comparison,” explains Peter Wingate, Team Leader for Knowledge Management at Natural England. “So, when we started the process of bringing all of these records together, TRIM Context came very high on our list of preferred solutions. It certainly met all of our EDRMS requirements hands down, and the fiscal team was satisfied that the investment was ‘future proof’ too.”

Tony Sumpster, Managing Director for TOWER Software EMEA adds, ”TRIM Context will help Natural England with information sharing between teams and offices  – this is particularly important where, for example, they handle freedom of information requests . Until now, parts of the organisation had been using spreadsheets and record systems developed in the 1980s to track records.”
