Information Workers often have the business need to share documents and collaborate with peers and colleagues who are not employed by their organisation, and have no access to resources within the corporate intranet, behind the firewall. Traditional ways of solving this problem revolve around simple file sharing, such as that provided by an external FTP server outside the corporate LAN, or using e-mail to repeatedly shuffle the document from one party to another.
Both approaches suffer from problems that weigh on the core activity of sharing information. Mail boxes fill with numerous messages, each containing different editions or revisions of the document, resulting in chaotic duplication and lack of structured development. FTP and other file sharing services suffer from a vacuum of contextual information - resulting in either uncommunicated metadata surrounding the development of the document, or disjointed e-mails, phone calls or extraneous notes within the document attempting to explain additions and changes. The added burden of supporting such a server solely for document exchange adds to the overhead.
